Kenny Schmied and Anthony Geraci delivered a strong opening race at Sebring International Raceway in the #72 Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 for Rafa Racing, securing a hard-fought second-place finish in the Am class of Pirelli GT4 America Race 1.
Starting from fourth in class, Geraci made an excellent getaway in the 29-car field, climbing to third by the end of the opening lap. An early full course yellow on lap two briefly neutralised the race following a stranded car on circuit, with racing resuming on lap four.
Geraci continued a strong pace and held position through the opening stint before the pit window opened on lap nine. A clean handover to Schmied kept the #72 firmly in contention as the race entered its second half.
Following the cycle of pit stops, Schmied emerged in second place by lap 14 but immediately came under heavy pressure from the #413 BMW. Despite a determined defence, the BMW made a late move to take the position on track. However, a five-second penalty issued to the rival car for a pit stop infringement promoted the Rafa Racing Toyota back into second place at the flag.
The result marked a strong start to the weekend for Schmied, Geraci and Rafa Racing at Sebring.
Race 2 of the weekend took place on Saturday at Sebring with Kenny Schmied starting the #72 Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 from fifth position in class.
A strong launch off the line saw Schmied immediately gain a position, moving up to fourth by the end of the opening lap. The race was quickly neutralised on lap two by a full course yellow following a car stopping on circuit, with green flag racing resuming on lap five.
Schmied settled back into a strong rhythm, maintaining fourth place while continuing to apply pressure ahead until the pit window opened on lap 10. The #72 Toyota made its mandatory stop on lap 12, handing over to Anthony Geraci for the final stint.
Once the field had completed the cycle of driver changes, Geraci was in sixth position but immediately found himself in the middle of an intense four-car battle for the podium positions. Running nose-to-tail, the fight remained incredibly close before Geraci made a decisive move on lap 16, diving up the inside at Turn 2 to claim fifth place.
Carrying the momentum forward, Geraci advanced to fourth on the following lap before continuing his pursuit of the third-place car. With just one lap remaining, the #188 ran wide, opening the door for Geraci to capitalise with a clean move up the inside to secure third place, a position he held to the chequered flag after an impressive closing stint.
The next race for the pairing will be at Road America in August.
