Tough Spa weekend for Akhil Rabindra

Arriving at the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium Akhil Rabindra was hoping for a strong result at the track that he raced on in Formula 3 last year but sadly it was not to be.

After qualifying P6 for race 1 and P7 for race 2 in the Silver class Akhil’s team mate Dean Macdonald took the start for race 1, as the field crossed the line on the rolling start Macdonald did not get the best of starts and suffered some contact on Lap 1, shortly into the race the safety car was deployed to recover a damaged car then on the restart another coming together between the Ginetta and Porsche bought out the safety car again, not good news for Macdonald who was hoping to make up the lost places in his stint. As the pit window opened Macdonald pitted to hand the car over to Rabindra but during the pit stop the team noticed damage to the radiator and a loss of coolant which meant the car had to be retired from the race.

With only two and a half hours before the next race the Black Bull Garage 59 team did a superb job to repair the car in time and Rabindra lined up on the grid to take the start, making up two positions in the early part of the race the McLaren 570s GT4 started to suffer some electrical issues causing the engine to go into limp mode, Rabindra pitted once the pit window had opened to hand over to Macdonald and the team set about curing the fault. Now with the fault rectified the #59 McLaren had lost 3 laps which was impossible for the young Scot to regain bringing the car home 7th in the Silver class.

The next round of the British GT Championship will be at Brands Hatch on 5th & 6th August
