European Career Best Result for Maloy in Italy
Nick Maloy achieved his best result to date over the weekend in the European GT4 Championship at Misano, Italy.
Teammate Emil Heyerdahl qualified in a fantastic P5 for race 1 but things didn’t go as planned for Nick during qualifying as he was hit by the #12 BMW and was unable to set a time. The BMW subsequently received a 5-place grid penalty for the incident, but it would also mean Nick would have to start from P46 for race 2.
With Emil starting the race he immediately moved into P4 at turn one but an incident behind bought out the safety car neutralising the race. As the race resumed with 45 minutes remaining Emil jumped into P3 and continued to push until the pit window opened with 30 minutes remaining. With Nick now in the car he rejoined the race and was immediately in an intense battle with four cars which would continue until the end of the race with Nick crossing the line in P7.
Race two on Sunday was going to be damage limitation for the pairing with Nick starting from P46 on the grid. As the green flag waved Nick immediately set about carving through the field making up 12 places on lap 1. Nick continued to push throughout his stint and when he pitted for the driver change, he had made up an amazing 24 positions and was running in P22. With Emil now in the car he left the pit lane, but the car developed a mechanical issue and Emil was forced to shut the car down and restart it loosing valuable time. Rejoining the race Emil set about regaining the time loss but a full course yellow was required to retrieve a stricken car. With the race resuming on lap 23 Emil pushed until the chequered flag bringing the #92 Wimmer Werk Motorsport Porsche home in P11 in the Pro class.
The next round of the European GT4 Championship will be at Spa Francorchamps, Belgium on June 27-30
